Abandoned Robot

Abandoned Robot

This was done during my Shading and Lighting class.  We were given the task to fully light and texture a scene of our choice.  We had the freedom to move around the models and modify the geometry to whatever we needed.

The original file contained these models, with no textures or lights.  I then moved things around and "broke down" the little robot so the scene looked like this:

The little robot kept reminding me of Wall-E, and I've always liked the idea of a robot portraying feeling.  Even though they technically shouldn't be able to in their binary world, we still connect with such characters as if they were humans.

Right away I wanted to capture a sense of sadness and perhaps abandonment of the robot, and started testing out the color and positioning of the lights before applying any textures.

As I continued to work on the project, I zoomed in the camera to focus on the robot more, and applied the textures to both the ship and the outside space.  The starry sky was done with procedural maya textures, and the planet was extracted from a photo.
